Product Development and Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DFMA) Course Description
This course introduces the product development process with a focused application of Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) principles. Participants will develop the skills necessary to design and develop physical products optimized for real-world manufacturing and assembly environments.
The curriculum emphasizes practical methodologies for evaluating manufacturing approaches across a range of component types, while applying assembly fundamentals to achieve efficient, cost-effective production outcomes. Through structured analysis and hands-on application, participants will develop the ability to interrogate product designs and identify opportunities to reduce complexity, improve robustness, and lower overall production costs.

Course Activities
Participants will engage directly with DFMA processes through hands-on disassembly and reassembly exercises using physical sample products. These exercises apply DFMA methods and techniques to systematically evaluate product simplicity, structural robustness, and cost efficiency. All necessary sample products, tools, and evaluation materials will be provided.
Where availability permits, a live demonstration of DFMA software will be conducted, giving participants direct exposure to the analytical tools used in professional practice and illustrating the measurable value the process delivers.
Learning Objectives
By the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand and apply the DFMA process within a product development context
- Evaluate existing product designs using established DFMA methods and techniques
- Design physical products that are cost-effective, structurally sound, and optimized for simplified manufacturing and assembly
- Demonstrate proficiency through hands-on product evaluation exercises
