Additive Manufacturing Fundamentals

This comprehensive 4-hour introduction to additive manufacturing (AM) is designed to provide participants with foundational knowledge and awareness of the rapidly evolving world of additive manufacturing. The course delivers a thorough overview of AM fundamentals, including detailed coverage of the seven distinct additive manufacturing technologies and their common use cases across various industries and applications.

Participants will develop a solid understanding of how different AM technologies solve real-world manufacturing challenges and gain valuable insights into successful business cases that demonstrate AM’s transformative potential. The training also equips attendees with practical knowledge on how to build effective additive manufacturing project teams, ensuring they can successfully lead or contribute to AM initiatives within their organizations.

Structured Learning Modules

The program is organized into five targeted modules, each designed for specific audiences and delivered as a cohesive group learning experience:

Module 1: Discover AM – Introduces participants to the fundamental concepts of additive manufacturing and provides a comprehensive overview of the technology landscape.

Module 2: AM Technology & Materials – Explores the seven additive manufacturing technologies in detail, covering the materials that enable each process and their specific applications.

Module 3: AM Design Cycle – Examines the unique design considerations and workflows required for successful additive manufacturing implementation.

Module 4: AM Value Proposition – Analyzes successful business cases and demonstrates how to identify and articulate the value that AM brings to different applications and industries.

Module 5: Managing AM Projects – Provides practical guidance on building and leading additive manufacturing project teams, including best practices for project management and stakeholder engagement.

Throughout the program, participants will engage in collaborative team exercises designed to reinforce learning and provide hands-on application of the concepts presented. The training includes continental breakfast and lunch to ensure participants can focus entirely on the learning experience.

Expert Instruction from Industry Leaders

This training program is delivered by The Barnes Global Advisors (TBGA) team, featuring some of the most accomplished professionals in the additive manufacturing industry. Instructors include:

· John Barnes, President of TBGA and CEO/Founder of Metal Powder Works, who brings over 30 years of experience in product development and aerospace with major companies including Honeywell, Lockheed Martin Skunk Works™, Australia’s CSIRO, and Arconic. John has been involved in metal additive manufacturing since the late 1990s and is internationally recognized for his contributions to the field.

· Dr. Tim Simpson has more than 20 years of experience implementing and teaching additive manufacturing. As co-director of Penn State’s Center for Innovative Materials Processing through Direct Digital Deposition (CIMP-3D), Tim specializes in design for additive manufacturing (DfAM) and has helped train and educate more than 600 industry practitioners across aerospace, automotive, consumer goods, defense, energy, medical, oil and gas, and space industries.

What Makes TBGA Training Uniquely Impactful

TBGA’s training stands apart due to its independent, data-driven methodology developed by committed AM professionals with over 350 years of combined experience. The team’s unique perspective comes from their hands-on experience implementing, qualifying, and certifying AM hardware across various industries and applications. The training employs a requirements-based approach that ensures participants understand not just the “how” but also the “why” behind additive manufacturing decisions.
