Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence have long used data representations to model the real world.  However, these models and their real-world correlates were effectively disassociated; there was no real-time connection between the representation and that which was modelled.  The concept of a” digital twin” is to have a computer model of a slice of the real world and to have a means to (1) monitor the real world and (2) to execute actions to maintain synchronization between the individual twins (the model and the correlated world).

This talk will introduce the key characteristics of a digital twin and how this pairing can be used to develop manufacturing applications.
