Over time, most companies will have increasing issues with enterprise-wide business system. It could be functional limitations, or aging technology, or a software vendor that is not very viable. Around 20% of companies have reached a point in which the issues are affecting operations and they are starting to ponder questions such as:
- Can existing ERP or accounting software be improved or upgraded?
- Have deficiencies in current ERP functionality, technology or vendor status reached a level to justify searching for new ERP software?
- What are the cost for various improvement options and how to assess and control typical high project risks and costs?
Such questions are truly complicated. Therefore, without the guidance of a well-crafted Enterprise Software Strategy, companies tend to overemphasize the costs and risks and not understand the real potential of improvement options. In this light companies often delay improvement actions until a time in which the current business system issues become worse and with higher risk.
