Additive Manufacturing (AM) is at a tipping point and ready to go mainstream in an industry that is already formidable. It is revolutionizing the way we think about design and manufacturing. Components that would have been impossible just a few years ago can now be made to high standards using a wide range of polymer, metal or ceramic powders. No longer solely a prototyping technology, AM is now being used for the production of components in a variety of industries. Whether as a replacement for existing production methods to reduce costs, or because of the ability to produce components that have up until now been impossible, it is clear that Additive Manufacturing will have an impact on the future of manufacturing.
Manufacturing in this country is a $2 trillion dollar sector, and if it were a country, it would the world’s 8th largest economy. Productivity in manufacturing is far outpacing all other sectors, allowing US manufacturers to be globally competitive. And who are the establishments contributing to these metrics? They are our nation’s small companies – 99% of all manufacturing establishments have less than 500 employees – the companies in in this room, that are investing in their facilities and their employees, and looking at future growth opportunities, such as Additive Manufacturing.
We couldn’t be prouder of the region that we serve, where manufacturing is strong and growing, and where our region is outpacing the state of PA and the country in our productivity gains. We have great manufacturing establishments in this community! And Additive Manufacturing has the potential to further excite and grow this industry.
