Six Sigma:
Black Belt Training and Certification

Creating significant bottom line gains

A Six Sigma Black Belt leads cross-functional teams and applies the Six Sigma methodology to projects that will yield substantial business results. Black Belt training consists of four weeks of classroom training, conducted over a four month time period. Each month consists of one week of actual Black Belt training classroom work and three weeks applying learned principles and techniques to process improvement projects defined prior to class participation.

Participants will receive all training materials and required books, individualized project review during and after training week, hands-on practice and practical case studies. Follow up management and project support can also be incorporated into the learning experience.

Due to the intense nature of this training, Six Sigma Black Belt candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • A desire to learn and a commitment to process improvement
  • A laptop computer (with the Minitab* software loaded) during the training weeks
  • At least one project that will require tool practice and usage during the training
  • A “Champion” that supports the Green Belt candidate and project by agreeing to allocate appropriate time and resources to insure the Green Belt’s success
  • Successful Completion of Catalyst Connection Green Belt training
*Minitab is a statistical software packaged used by most Six Sigma practitioners.

Overview of Training Topics:

  • Week 1—Define and Measure: The projects that were identified prior to the training will be properly scoped. Real problems and projects aligned with the organizational strategic goals are identified and prioritized. Process characterization begins and measurement systems are validated. Current process variation is quantified.
  • Week 2—Analyze: The tools will be used to understand where variation exists in the process and how to collect and analyze data to make improvements. The project timeline is revisited, the thought map updated, and the problem will begin to be solved.
  • Week 3—Improve: More data analysis techniques will be applied to determine appropriate improvements. Measurable gains are starting to be realized as the improvement begins.
  • Week 4—Control and Rollout: Additional techniques will be used to optimize the process, and implement the improvements. The improvements need to be controlled and continued so that long-term results are maintained, producing measurable business results and process knowledge. Projects are documented and process owners recognize their responsibilities for process improvement.
