There are many components of diversity that contribute to how well a team performs together. Some of these key elements were discussed on the diversity and cross cultural panel that took place October 3rd. Cultural differences must be adapted to appropriately due to the simple fact that these differences can unintentionally cause conflict within teams. Diversity amongst teams can range anywhere from skin color, race and gender to expertise, personality and generational differences.
One of the panelists stated that one of his best experiences was in manufacturing due to the fact that everyone had tough skin and could push through tough issues and engage in conflict. Maximizing diversity can give teams a very good creative framework while allowing them to work hands on with personal problem solving.
Diverse working teams are becoming more appealing, but are often failing due to the fact that they are not being integrated across the organization or team well enough for them to succeed. It takes time and good leadership to implement diversity into teams in a well working manner. Strong leadership can vastly improve a team when the leader has a level of competency on how to integrate and work with diverse individuals.
