Six Sigma Black Belt Training and Certification

A black belt knows how to lead cross-functional teams headed by green belts, and apply Six Sigma methodologies to projects that will yield substantial business results. Training for certification takes four months. Each month consists of a week of classroom work followed by three weeks of applying principles and techniques to process improvement projects that have been defined before training begins. Catalyst Connection supplies all classroom materials and required books; individualized project reviews; hands-on practice; and practical case studies. After certification, we can supplement the learning experience with follow-up management and project support at your request.

Candidates must bring to the course:

  • A desire to learn and a commitment to process improvement
  • A laptop computer equipped with Minitab
  • At least one appropriate project
  • A champion’s agreement to allocate sufficient time and resources
  • A record of having completed Catalyst Connection green belt training

Topics

Week 1: Define and Measure

  • Properly scope pre-identified class projects
  • Identify and prioritize real problems and projects that align with the organization’s strategic goals
  • Begin process characterization; validate measurement systems
  • Quantify current process variation

Week 2 : Analyze

  • Use appropriate tools to understand where process variation exists and how to collect and analyze data needed for improvements
  • Revisit project timeline, update thought map, and begin problem solving

Week 3: Improve

  • Apply more data analysis techniques to determine appropriate improvements
  • Realize measurable gains as improvement begins

Week 4: Control and Rollout

  • Use additional techniques to optimize the process; implement improvements
  • Control and continue improvements so that long-term results are maintained, producing measurable business results and process knowledge
  • Document projects and ensure that process owners recognize their responsibilities for process improvement

Certification will be awarded to candidates who:

  • Complete the course
  • Complete at least two projects using Six Sigma philosophy
  • Submit reports that concisely describe projects as well as the methods and tools used to achieve their objectives
  • Achieve a grade of 80% or higher on a comprehensive technical competency exam
